Terex Celebrates 70th Anniversary of Digger Derricks

For 70 years, utility professionals have used Terex digger derricks on power grid construction and maintenance projects to bore holes and set poles. Established in 1945 with the advent of the Tel-E-lect digger derrick, today the company’s product line includes the Terex Commander 4000, 5000 and 6000 digger derricks, as well as the Terex General 65, 80 and 95 models.

Tel-E-lect digger derricks were first engineered and built by Leroy C. Lindquist, owner of the Minnetonka Manufacturing Co., which manufactured parts for the telephone and electric utility markets in Hopkins, Minn. At the time, Lindquist worked with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. to develop a machine run by power take-off on a truck’s transmission to dig holes for telephone poles. The first Tel-E-lect trucks utilized the truck’s differential to mechanically turn an auger, which was suspended from the end of an A-frame boom and was raised and lowered by the truck winch line to drill a hole.

The 1950s and 1960s saw three Tel-E-lect digger derrick product innovations introduced that are still in use today: the Rite-Way auger storage bracket, pole-grabbing winch and hydraulic collector block. The Telecon was also introduced, allowing a digger to be mounted on a smaller, lighter, more maneuverable chassis, and the Commander I Series digger derrick was developed. Additionally, the company developed and introduced the first fiberglass third section built to eliminate pin-on third sections.

Tel-E-lect opened manufacturing facilities in Watertown and Huron, S.D., in the 1970s, and by the early 1980s the company had established its corporate headquarters in Watertown. In 1988, Simon Engineering PLC purchased Tel-E-lect, and the company became known as Simon-Telelect Inc. The company expanded its product offerings in 1992 with the acquisition of Hi-Ranger aerial devices. Terex purchased Tel-E-lect from Simon Engineering in 1997, which became the foundation for Terex Utilities. www.terex.com/utilities

The products expand Mattracks’ current Track-tor-Assist lineup of conversion systems for the agriculture market, commercial market, and extremely large machinery and equipment with axle loads from 10 to 20 tons. Track widths in the TA9000 series are 15 inches, 20 inches, 24 inches and 30 inches.

The YS3 track has been designed to expel snow and ice with minimal ice buildup, and the heavier framework has been designed for increased load-carrying capacity. The offset road wheels reduce vibration and noise, and increase efficiency, fuel economy and track tread life.

MultiTrack Portable Tracking System

DPL Telematics has released the MultiTrack system, an advanced solution for wireless monitoring and remote tracking of any powered or unpowered asset. The portable GPS unit may be hidden on any asset, installing in seconds.

The MultiTrack allows managers to remotely monitor an asset from an Internet-based software package or a mobile app. The unit is the first telematics product of its kind to feature no external wiring or antenna; up to 16 weeks of internal battery life between charges and complete recharge in three hours via wall plug; little to no sky view required – may be hidden inside or under certain assets; rugged, SAE J1455-compliant waterproof design for deployment in harsh environments; and compact and complete portability allowing for easy rotation between company assets.

As a locator, the MultiTrack notifies whenever the host asset begins moving as well as on demand, and alerts during customer-defined curfews whenever there is unauthorized activity. www.dpltel.com

ZeroLift Pad Rack

DICA Outrigger Pads has introduced the ZeroLift Pad Rack, a crane accessory offering safety benefits for crane operators. The Pad Rack eliminates the need for crane operators to manually lift and carry outrigger pads, and makes transport on the job site simple and safe.

The ZeroLift Pad Rack has a carrying capacity of 1,000 pounds and is adjustable to fit pad sizes up to 48 inches by 60 inches. Made of high-strength steel, the Pad Rack easily installs on either the front or rear of rough-terrain cranes. A single hitch point allows the ZeroLift Pad Rack to fold up and out of the way when not in use. When mounted correctly, the ZeroLift Pad Rack has minimal impact on crane ground clearance. At only 60 pounds, the Pad Rack does not affect crane load charts. In addition, the ZeroLift Pad Rack is versatile enough to transport other equipment, such as toolboxes.

DICA offers more than 50 models of engineered outrigger pads that help employers with proper crane setup. Many of these models can be transported with the new ZeroLift Pad Rack. www.dicausa.com

XL Hybrids Receives CARB Executive Order

XL Hybrids has received a California Air Resources Board executive order allowing aftermarket conversions of gasoline-powered 2012-2014 model year General Motors 2500 and 3500 vans, Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans into hybrid electric vehicles. The XL Hybrids XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System is on sale now in California for the first time.

The XL3 Hybrid Electric Drive System has been shown to increase miles driven per gallon by approximately 25 percent in real-world fleet vehicle driving. The XL3 is a regenerative braking system that requires no special fueling stations, plug-ins or maintenance. Fleets can rapidly adopt the XL3 system because there is no driver training required, no new fueling infrastructure required, and the install takes less than one day. Plus, driver productivity increases because drivers can spend more time on their routes and less time at the pump.

In addition, the fuel reduction achieved with the XL3 hybrid system helps California fleets accelerate their corporate sustainability initiatives. According to the EPA, every 1,000 gallons of fuel saved results in 8.9 metric tons of carbon dioxide reduced. www.xlhybrids.com

Hino Trucks Celebrates 30 Years

Founded in 1984 as a limited distributorship with responsibility for importing Class 4 through 7 cab-over trucks, Hino has evolved into a prominent U.S. company with a dealer network of more than 200 points, assembly and manufacturing facilities in Williamstown, W.Va., and Marion, Ark., with eight locations throughout the country.

Having garnered more than a dozen industry awards for customer satisfaction and Truck of the Year three times in the last six years alone, Hino Trucks continues to set record sales and post market share gains annually that make the 30-year-old company one of the country’s fastest-growing medium-duty truck brands.

“It is a great honor for me to celebrate this anniversary as the president of Hino Motors Sales U.S.A.,” said Yoshinori Noguchi, Hino Trucks president and CEO. “While many things have changed since 1984, our goals have always remained the same – to create the most innovative, high-quality products in our industry. CTE Introduces CTRAC8000

Custom Truck & Equipment has introduced the CTRAC8000, a high-payload, low-ground-pressure track vehicle designed to deliver high-capacity cranes and long-reaching aerial devices to job sites you can’t get to on rubber tires. CTE’s universal chassis design, which uses the same frame specifications as a high-capacity truck chassis, is the only easy-mount and dismount track chassis in its class. Any crane/aerial device/truck-mounted equipment requiring a chassis with an 80,000-pound GVWR can be mounted as quickly and easily as factory install. The crane or lift mounted to the CTRAC8000 platform will see no change in the standard lift capacities charts or range diagrams. There is no modification of any kind to the outriggers or critical components, which means you can keep your manufacturer’s warranty in place. CTE maximizes stability with dual bogie wheels to keep even ground contact pressure that improves lateral stability on side slopes, and specially designed cleated grousers give this machine grip and agility on ice and snow. www.cte-equipment.com

Asplundh Adopts Propane Autogas

Asplundh, an international provider of vegetation management services to utilities and municipalities, is one of the first in its industry to adopt propane autogas for some of the medium-duty trucks in its fleet.

Currently, Asplundh has two Ford F-650 trucks powered by ROUSH CleanTech propane autogas fuel systems. The most complex unit is a bucket truck equipped with a 58-foot aerial lift. An Asplundh-affiliated company also operates a chip dump truck in California where emissions regulations are stringent.

It is estimated that each of these trucks will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 117,000 pounds over its lifetime. Compared to conventional diesel counterparts, propane autogas vehicles also minimize smog-producing hydrocarbons, virtually eliminate particulate matter and lessen noise levels. Additionally, propane autogas lowers fuel and maintenance costs and decreases reliance on imported oil. www.asplundh.com
