Inside EUFMC 2026: Addressing the Pressures Reshaping Utility Fleets

Written by Kate Wade on . Posted in , .

Coinciding with the country’s 250th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the 73rd annual Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference will take place May 31 to June 3 at the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center in Virginia.

“Driving Safety, Sustainability & Technical Expertise” is the theme of this year’s educational program. LG&E and KU’s Peter Waldrab, vice president of safety and technical training, is expected to deliver the General Session keynote address, which he said will explore how various challenges – from explosive load growth and more volatile weather to heightened customer affordability concerns and a rapidly shifting regulatory landscape – translate directly into vehicle fleet strategy.

“As utilities balance reliability, cost, safety and sustainability, fleet leaders are being asked to rethink long-standing assumptions about vehicle mix, infrastructure and life-cycle management,” Waldrab explained. “From ICE to EV to hybrid, from mobile power to storm response readiness, from traditional maintenance models to data-driven fleet management, fleets need to be an enabling extension of grid strategy.”

Other scheduled General Session educational topics include:

  • Leveraging Tools, Resources and AI for Smarter Processes
  • ANSI Update
  • Future Proofing the Fleet Garage: Emerging Technologies and Best Practices in Workplace Safety
  • Navigating Staffing Challenges in Fleet Operations
  • The Dangers of Distracted, Impaired and Unsafe Driving
  • Smarter Job Hazard Reviews with AI Support
  • Trends Driving Changes in OEM Product Lineups
  • Driving Spec Modernization Through Fleet/Manufacturer Collaboration
  • Strategic Fleet Procurement: Tackling Rising Costs and Future Planning

Returning this year is the Equipment Show and Drive-Through Demonstration, an EUFMC staple, which features exhibits and presentations of vehicles, equipment, products and services designed for utility fleet operations. The fourth annual Women in Utility Fleet gathering is also set to convene, bringing together female representatives from fleets, manufacturers and suppliers.
