LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?

Connecting the Dots

There’s no shortage of innovation in fleet. The challenge isn’t finding new tools – it’s leveraging them in ways that deliver real impact.

That idea is a common thread throughout this issue of Utility Fleet Professional.

Telematics, for instance, has long promised safer, more efficient operations, but data alone won’t alter outcomes. Progress occurs as fleet leaders turn insights into action, reducing risk and building trust across the organization.

The same holds true for predictive artificial intelligence, which has the potential to significantly improve operator safety and asset reliability. Its value to fleets, however, depends on how well those insights are integrated into daily decision-making. Predictive AI platforms can inform, but fleet professionals must act on what they learn.

One thing the industry knows for sure is that vehicles continue to grow in complexity. To better prepare operators for real-world hazards, utility organizations are increasingly investing in simulation training technology, which offers a low-risk, practical way to build skills and confidence before operators are handed the keys to best-in-class equipment.

That equipment includes all-terrain utility vehicles, which a great number of fleets employ to address a common field challenge: access. Available in a range of formats, ATUVs enable crews to traverse challenging terrain that traditional vehicles weren’t built to handle.

Fuel is an ongoing cost concern, one that’s currently heightened by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Alternative options – including hydrogen, renewable natural gas and renewable diesel – could help ease that pain. Learning about their various advantages and tradeoffs equips fleet leaders to make informed choices shaped by operational realities and long-term organizational strategy.

We – the human element – are at the center of all this. Our profile of EUFMC’s Ann Brown-Hailey in this issue of UFP highlights the value of strong leadership, relationships and representation in a rapidly changing industry.

One thing is clear throughout these pages: Making connections – between data and action, technology and trust, strategy and people – is a core component of fleet success. We continuously strive to help you make those connections. Thank you for reading and for the work you do every day.
