Keeping Up

The hardest part of putting together the Spring 2012 issue of Utility Fleet Professional was not finding enough material to fill the pages. The real challenge was determining what to include from the very large volume of information we had available.

If you’re attending The Work Truck Show, you’ll know exactly what I mean. On display at the annual event are the latest technologies from more than 550 exhibitors. Also featuring a large expo of products was the Hybrid, Electric and Advanced Truck Users Forum (HTUF) annual meeting this past fall.

Progress Report

Fuel-1-EUFMC-WebSuccessfully implementing new technology into fleet operations is a major challenge for managers. In the past few years, perhaps no greater challenge has been faced than the adoption of 2010 emissions-compliant diesel engines. During the 2011 Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference (www.eufmc.com), two fleets detailed their programs and the performance of these engines in their operations.

Since the most recent diesel engine emissions standards took effect at the beginning of 2010, trucks equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) engines have been fitted with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tanks. DEF is a necessary component of emissions compliance using SCR technology.

Transcube XT Fuel Tanks

transcube-fuel-tanksThe Transcube XT line of high-capacity diesel fuel tanks features tanks that are legally transportable while full, making them ideal for rapid fuel deployment to remote locations. Standard models in the line include the TCT100 and TCT200, which offer capacities of 2,450 gallons and 5,000 gallons, respectively. Also available is the TCT200CAB, a 4,500-gallon capacity tank that provides additional cabinet space for equipment and accessories.

Each Transcube model features a cylindrical inner tank and internal baffles to minimize fuel surges while the tank is in transit or being maneuvered on a job site. The inner tank is enclosed within an outer wall for secondary containment. Each tank is equipped with four feed and return connections to provide direct plumbing to engines, along with a fuel pump or auxiliary equipment feed. Each model also features a 2-inch fill pipe, including an overfill prevention valve for quick refilling. All ports, pumps, fittings and connections, and a content gauge, are centrally located in a weatherproof control cabinet, which is housed inside the secondary containment area and secured with a three-point locking system. An inspection manway on all models allows for simple maintenance, cleaning and inspection of the inner fuel tank and compartments. Additionally, each tank has forklift pockets on two sides to allow for simple handling and positioning.

Transcube XT tanks are offered with several pumps, fittings and other optional tools, including electric transfer pumps, supply and return connections, fuel hoses and quick couplers, hose reels, gauges and overfill alarms. Tanks and fittings can also be supplied with custom colors to match a user’s existing fleet of equipment.

Chelsea 890 Series PTO

chelsea-890-seriesThe 890 Series Power Take-Off (PTO) for Allison 3000/4000 transmissions is mounted between the transmission and the frame rail of the truck. It mounts like a standard side-mounted PTO with an additional bracket at the rear of the transmission, and places the output of the PTO beyond the rear of the transmission where there is extra space. The 890 Series is a single unit, not a PTO with an extension. The main shaft is one piece, eliminating the input splines between the PTO and the shaft extension. The clutch has been moved to the rear of the unit to allow the housing and gear section to tuck in tightly to the transmission. The output utilizes a wet spline, which eliminates fretting problems.

ONSPOT Tire Chains

onspot-tire-chainsThe ONSPOT Automatic Tire Chain System offers the traction of a single set of conventional snow chains without having to stop the vehicle. The cab-mounted electric switch provides 12 volts to an air solenoid on the vehicle’s frame rail. Compressed air to the solenoid is supplied from either the vehicle’s onboard air system or a 12-volt compressor. The solenoid opens when the dashboard switch is activated, allowing compressed air to enter the air cylinder and lower the chainwheel so it contacts the inside of the tire. The friction between the tire and the rubber-covered chainwheel causes the chainwheel to rotate, creating enough centrifugal force to flail the chains out. Six lengths of chain spaced at 60-degree intervals on the chainwheel ensure that there are two chains between the tire and road surface at all times, whether the vehicle is accelerating, braking or in a wheel lockup condition. When the dashboard switch is turned off, the solenoid exhausts the air provided to the chain units and return springs in the air cylinders, bringing the chainwheels back to their resting position.

The tire chain system is available from more than 200 OEMs and 1,400 dealers. ONSPOT, founded in 1977, manufactures its products in the company’s ISO 9001-certified factory in Indiana.
