Controlling Costs with Fuel Cards

Gelinas-1-WebWhether a gallon of fuel costs $4, $2 or somewhere in between, it’s most likely going to represent your largest equipment-related expense. Because of that, it only makes sense to do everything possible to control what is charged against fuel in your fleet. In times past, drivers, who would need to purchase fuel before returning to a controlled distribution location, were often given cash and told to bring in receipts to cover what was spent. Who could tell how many truck stop lunches were included in those receipts? Thankfully, those days are pretty much gone.

Chelsea 890 Series PTO

chelsea-890-seriesThe 890 Series Power Take-Off (PTO) for Allison 3000/4000 transmissions is mounted between the transmission and the frame rail of the truck. It mounts like a standard side-mounted PTO with an additional bracket at the rear of the transmission, and places the output of the PTO beyond the rear of the transmission where there is extra space. The 890 Series is a single unit, not a PTO with an extension. The main shaft is one piece, eliminating the input splines between the PTO and the shaft extension. The clutch has been moved to the rear of the unit to allow the housing and gear section to tuck in tightly to the transmission. The output utilizes a wet spline, which eliminates fretting problems.

ONSPOT Tire Chains

onspot-tire-chainsThe ONSPOT Automatic Tire Chain System offers the traction of a single set of conventional snow chains without having to stop the vehicle. The cab-mounted electric switch provides 12 volts to an air solenoid on the vehicle’s frame rail. Compressed air to the solenoid is supplied from either the vehicle’s onboard air system or a 12-volt compressor. The solenoid opens when the dashboard switch is activated, allowing compressed air to enter the air cylinder and lower the chainwheel so it contacts the inside of the tire. The friction between the tire and the rubber-covered chainwheel causes the chainwheel to rotate, creating enough centrifugal force to flail the chains out. Six lengths of chain spaced at 60-degree intervals on the chainwheel ensure that there are two chains between the tire and road surface at all times, whether the vehicle is accelerating, braking or in a wheel lockup condition. When the dashboard switch is turned off, the solenoid exhausts the air provided to the chain units and return springs in the air cylinders, bringing the chainwheels back to their resting position.

The tire chain system is available from more than 200 OEMs and 1,400 dealers. ONSPOT, founded in 1977, manufactures its products in the company’s ISO 9001-certified factory in Indiana.
